THE 1975 PLAYS A SECOND NIGHT IN PITTBURGH

Date of show: November 1, 2016 Location: Stage AE, Pittsburgh, PA Photos and Review by: Nina Martin/StellarPhoto Following their epic & memorable sold out Star Wars themed Halloween show at Stage AE, The 1975 performed a second night in the heart of Steel City at Stage AE on November 1, 2016

Starting the night off was 070 Shake. The NJ Rapper (along with her DJ) brought some lively hip hop beats and a different sound than what most fans expected, but nonetheless got everyone amped up for the show. The 4 piece English rock quartet come on stage opening the set up with their self titled song "The 1975" building such anticipation for what was to be an unforgettable round 2 in Pittsburgh. Upbeat and energetic hits "Love Me" and "Ugh" followed, displaying vocalist Matty Healy's animated side, where he presents plenty of facial expressions, dances sometimes uncontrollably, all whilst bopping his curls around, freely. Bright neon pinks, greens, and cyans illuminate the huge projection pillars for songs like "A Change Of Heart," which Healy stated that it is his favorite song that they do. Guitarist Adam Hann and bassist Ross MacDonald compliment each other with such ease, breezing through one catchy melody after another. With drummer George Daniel being on a bit of a hiatus over the summer with a shoulder injury, it was good to see George back in action and the group whole again creating that unique, distinctive sound.

This set was more ambient and laid back from previous shows, playing more instrumentals and hidden gems off of both chart topping albums, like "Undo," "M.O.N.E.Y," and "lostmyhead." Softening the mood saxophonist John Waugh splashes in just the right amount of jazz to certain songs. One of the group's most notorious songs, "Sex" had everyone in the venue jumping and rocking out. The strobe lights suited the exciting vibes perfectly, there wasn't a soul there who wasn't genuinely enjoying themselves. Wrapping up the night with not 2, not 3, but a 4 song worthy encore including "Medicine," "If I Believe You," "Chocolate" and "The Sound" the guys delivered an exceptional second night in Pittsburgh, leaving everyone in complete admiration.

It is quite apparent that The 1975 has put a lot of thought and effort into their live performance, and it shows. Healy has such a remarkable way with connecting to their fans, it is truly a treat to see in action. From playing huge festivals and countless sold out headlining shows, 2016 has been an exemplary year for the guys, I can only imagine what this band has in store for 2017.
